Schinus Molle Trees. Peruvian Pepper Trees.
The Schinus Molle is one of the most spectacular and graceful trees. The slender trunk has brown-grayish rough bark and is topped with many graceful weeping branches. The aromatic leaves are finely pinnate (feathery) with many leaflets and are a pale to dark green in colour. Small creamy white flowers appear in Spring; although it can be all year round in milder climates; and are followed by long cascading clusters of small fragrant pink fruit, fleshy at first but dry when ripe.
The fruits are edible and a regular component in pepper mills but care must be taken as they are in the same family as Cashew nut and some people may have allergic reactions.
A very elegant tree for those who are wanting something a little unusual in their gardens.
