Averrhoa Carambola. Star Fruit Trees.

The Averrhoa Carambola, commonly known as the Star Fruit Tree is a slow growing small compact tree. Its many branches produce a broad bushy rounded crown with its bark turning from a whitish to a reddish colour as it matures. Leaves are oval to oblong in shape, a medium green in colour and are arranged pinnately with a single terminal leaflet, smooth on the upper surface with fine whitish hairs on the undertsides. The leaflets are also sensitive to light and shock folding together at night fall and any abrupt movements. Small bell shaped flowers have five petals and are rose-red-purple in colour, arranged in small clusters usually at the ends of branches. The fruit production can begin after the first year with showy fruit having a thin waxy skin, orange to yellow in colour when ripe. The yellow flesh is juicy with a crisp texture, is full of antioxidants and when cut in cross-section is star shaped, hence its common name. Can be eatern raw or great for making into jams jellies or juices too.
