Ginkgo Biloba Tree. Maidenhair Tree.

The Ginkgo Biloba is very unique as it is related to no other living plant. It is also one of the oldest, dating back over 200 million years. A really elegant tree starting out quite narrow in shape but as it matures it spreads out and becomes broader. Very pretty unusual leaves, similar to the Maidenhair Fern are fan shaped and divided into 2 lobes, spirally arranged along the branch shoots, bright green in Spring and Summer turning a very showy brilliant yellow colour in Autumn. Each tree is either male of female, with mature male trees producing thick yellow catkins in late Spring and the female, smaller ones. An incredibly strong tree, it is resistant to pests, disease and urban pollution so perfect for urban planting in courtyards and city gardens as it is also slow growing. The Gingko has long been valued for its healing and medicinal properties, being sold widely in health food shops. The national tree of China.
