Bauhinia Tomentosa. Yellow Bell Orchid Tree

The Bauhinia Tomentosa is a small shrubby tree with slender drooping branches. Its bark is greyish in colour and smooth although often it can be hairy (hence the name 'Tomentosa'). A beautiful tropical tree, bell shaped pendulous flowers up to 7cm long have large yellow petals with black to maroon coloured centres and are produced in late summer. The leaves are a light green and two lobed and the fruit is a pale brown pod, slender and velvety. In warm climates this tree is evergreen, but in cooler ones it tends to be semi-deciduous or deciduous.

Commonly known as the Yellow Bell Orchid Tree, it is a perfect plant for a conservatory, atrium or greenhouse as it can easily be pruned to keep it's size and shape. Great also as a patio plant during summer, but will need to be over-wintered inside. Plants flower in their second year.
